The Late Unbinding

Maturity 5the self your later chapters grow toward.

The second half of your life is steering you into motion. If your first decades were arranged for safety, expect the arrangement to loosen from the mid-thirties on: work that travels, a career change nobody predicted, a move, a freedom bought rather than inherited. You become adaptable in a way that startles people who filed you as steady, and you handle change better at fifty than you did at twenty-five.

What you release is the safe arrangement, and harder than that, the identity built on staying. The role of the dependable one, the fixed address in everyone's phone, the job you kept because leaving would confuse people — these thin out. Release also your fear of appearing inconsistent.

It comes online as an almost physical claustrophobia in routines that used to comfort you. Doors that were shut appear ajar. The shadow is dispersal — motion used to dodge intimacy and depth. Keep two or three anchors deliberately: a person, a craft, a place you return to. Freedom holds better with ballast.
