The second half of your life is steering you outward, toward something larger than your own household. Past thirty-five your concerns broaden: the cause, the students, the patients, the community that has nothing to give you back. Many with this maturity end up teaching, healing, advocating or making art that speaks for people other than themselves, and it happens whether or not they planned a noble career.
What you release is the personal scoreboard. Ambitions you have carried since your twenties will simply lose their flavour, and things you owned or authored will pass to others without the pang you expected. Release also the accounting of who wronged you; you will not be able to carry the wider work and the old ledger at once.
It comes online as an odd generosity and a series of endings you did not choose but do not fight. The shadow is diffuse martyrdom — giving to everyone and belonging to no one. Give somewhere specific, to people whose names you know.
