When things break you withdraw. The phone goes face down, the replies stop, and you go somewhere quiet to work out what actually happened. You need to understand the shape of a disaster before you can bear it, and understanding requires no audience.
The solitude is not avoidance in itself. You come back with a clearer read on the situation than anybody who spent the week reacting. What harms you is the length of the retreat and the coldness of the frame. You can analyse a loss so thoroughly that you never actually feel it, and disappear so long that the people who love you learn to stop reaching.
The mature version time-limits the retreat. Take the two days, tell one person you are taking them, come back and say something true out loud rather than only concluding it.
