You are read before you say a word, and usually read as reserved. Your consonants produce a still, contained surface: little unnecessary movement, a face that gives away almost nothing, a habit of listening with your gaze slightly off to one side. The gap is that this cool exterior gets read as coldness or condescension when it is really absorption, and occasionally shyness. You are usually far more engaged than the room believes, and often more moved. People decide you find them uninteresting and they stop offering, and then you conclude, wrongly, that nobody wanted to talk to you.
Use it deliberately by giving small deliberate signals your face will not give on its own. One warm sentence within the first minute. Someone's name, said aloud. A specific question that proves you were listening closely, which you were. Keep the depth and the privacy; you have earned both. Just add one visible gesture of welcome, because your surface will never generate one by accident.
