What you want, when nobody is asking, is to get to the bottom of something. Not opinions and not a broad education — one question followed all the way down until you know rather than believe. You also want a room with a door in it, and hours that nobody has a claim on, because the thinking cannot happen while you are being pleasant.
What feeds this is depth plus a witness. Solitary study is only half of it; the other half is saying the finding aloud to one person who is competent enough to push back. Understanding you never speak turns stale in you.
The counterfeit is knowingness — the quiet pleasure of having already seen through it. Cynicism is a very good imitation of insight and it costs nothing, so you can spend years being unimpressed and call it discernment.
Unfed, this goes cold. You withdraw further than you meant to, answer questions about your life in facts rather than in truth, and one day notice that the privacy you protected has become an absence of anyone who knows you. Keep the door. But let one person through it, and tell them what you actually found in there.
