What you want, when nobody is asking, is to leave a structure behind. Not to be remembered fondly — to have built a thing that keeps working after you have stopped attending to it. An institution, a company, a body of method, a building. You measure your life against a scale most people would find unreasonable, and you have never quite admitted that out loud.
What feeds it is the vision made physical, in stages. Foundations poured. The first ten users. A team that executes your plan correctly in your absence. You need the abstraction to become load-bearing, or it does not count to you.
The counterfeit is scale as a feeling. Big plans are intoxicating and cost nothing, so you may spend years with a magnificent unstarted project, or attach yourself to someone else's enormous enterprise and mistake proximity for authorship.
Unfed, this becomes paralysis dressed as high standards — nothing is begun because nothing yet matches the picture — and then a heaviness you cannot explain to people who think you are doing well. Cut the vision into something you can finish this quarter. Built badly and standing beats perfect and imaginary, every time.
